On some level, I believe we are all a little afraid to sit with ourselves. When we distract ourselves from getting in touch with our deeper, more painful emotions we become disconnected from other, important parts too.
 
In my experience, in avoiding the scarier parts we also move farther away from the healthier parts of ourselves which can cause a deep sense of loneliness. In other words, you need to feel the more painful emotions in order to get closer to yourself.
